Surrounding the hype of Apple iPad device, there were many views and thoughts. Generally, it seems that the Apple Enthusiasts has too high an expectation of iPad, expecting a huge difference, eyeball dropping effect.
The truth is, when iPhone was launch, most were just as skeptical.... folks.. remember ?.
If one were to really listen what Steve Jobbs mentioned during his keynote speech, iPad is a lifestyle, is a Device. Probably brand new way of computing. It's NOT a computer. It's NOT a phone. It's NOT a kindle replacement. It is something new.
An yes, absolutely i would agree that this device is a beauty and combination of technology to-date, all in one. Some argues ;- - "Rather get a net-book .." - Theres' no USB ports... no convenient extensions...
Heres' what i think:
Firstly, it is not JUST a netbook. Think about it - How many "Netbooks" can "boot-up" within 1-2 seconds, and launch your favourite browser to just 'read news' ? I for one, love the convenience of using iPhone to look-up popluar food places, how to get to a place, check emails... try turning on a netbook and see how long it takes.... before you could search/get the information you one.
i.e. Demonstrate how you could just grab a powered down device off your desk, power it on, search for the information you require, shut it down and go for your run.. in less than 2 minutes... Try that with ANY Netbook currently on the market ...
It's about life-style.
Secondly, people are forgetting the power. Battery life. Most netbooks under US$500 will not make it though 1-2 hours of battery life. Yes, you could get a SONY with 7-10 Hour battery life, but that would cost you nothing short of US$1500/- !! three times the price..
Thirdly, the utilization of this wonderfull device, how I visuallize i could be using this iPad: (Remember, it is a lifestyle) - at home, it would Doc in the most prominent place, running slide shows of my beloved daughter. - connected to HD TV, i would purchase and download some of the latest release of movies. - needing to check my mails, would just pull it off the stand and slip into my comfortable bed, reading my mails and replying. - needless to say, game a little with all those apps that i had already purchase on my iPhone synced to iPad.. - may be let my 18 mth old daugther play her favourite Doodle Buddy Application on the iPad. On the car - It would be one of the biggest GPS+Map screen on the market!! At work. - it will be the only thing on my table standing upright, besides my Office PC. Running slide shows as usual. - It would totally be my calender, contacts. Flipping through the'pages' when looking for a contact to call. - It would join me in my meetings, taking notes with it's huge keyboard that i sorely miss on my iPhone. - As a techy, i'd use RDP + VNC on my iPhone to my systems. And the iPad would just be able to do that even better! Take it as a Touch Screen Windows XP running on a iPad. Only all processing power is handled by the PC. - I could take my presentations and do multi-touch displays to demonstrate my ideas + concepts. IMPRESSIVE!! Be Awed
... ALL THAT for a device at a price < US$1K ... Beat that!...
What would be wonderful: - if the iPad without 3G is able to use BLUE-TOOTH to do Tethering ( Internet Access) Then i dun need two data plans. - if Car manufacturers start having an iPad docking station to replace the - Radio, CD Player, GPS Machine and perhaps install an on-board projector that makes iPad display turn into a HUD like for the Fighter Pilots...... (just too much sci-fi). .. hahha.
Bottomline: What is iPad... People will look back at iPad as the device that made a small (maybe huge) revolution to the computing industry at a time where economy is tough. It brings about the next level of user-interface, beyond what we thought could have been possible.
